Stairlift Installation Requirements

Please note: These requirements are written primarily for Washington State in the United States.  Other areas may have different requirements.  Please check your local codes.

1.  Electrical requirement.  A 120 volt AC, 15 amp, 60 hz, single-phase, dedicated electrical circuit shall be installed for each stairlift. An electrical permit must be obtained.  A fused disconnect switch must be located within sight of the lift. See our detailed electrical specifications page for more information.  (The lifts come with a standard power cord with a plug which is meant to just plug into a convenient wall outlet, but Washington State requires a hard-wired, dedicated circuit by code. In other states and countries, this code requirement might not apply.) An inspection will be required to clear the permit.  Check out our Power Requirements Page for further information.

2.  Stairlift must be installed using an elevator permit. At the completion of the installation, a final inspection will be required to clear the permit.

3.  Stairs should be a minimum of 36" (91cm) wide, which has been standard for many years in the USA.  They must be in good condition and capable of supporting the weight of the average track (100 - 200 Lbs (45 - 90kg))  and the chair unit (100 Lbs (45kg)).  The track mounts to the stair treads, not on the wall.

4.  The stairwell should have good lighting at the top and bottom for safety when getting on and off the lift.  A grab rail mounted on the walls adjacent to the chair is a good idea too, especially at the top landing.

5.  Outdoor stairs should have a cover over the chair and the track to keep rain and leaves off. Only certain model stairlifts are certified for outdoor use.

6.  Handrails (if any) should be removed if they are on the same side the stairlift will be installed on unless the stairs are at least 40" (101cm) wide.

7.  Stairlift must be allowed to come all the way up to the top landing so the person can get on and off safely without danger of falling down the stairs.  Sometimes a door or other obstruction will have to be removed to allow this or a Stairlift model chosen which has a short overrun, like the Excel.

8.  Stairlifts should have professional maintenance on the following schedule:
For private homes: Semi-Annually or Annually
For adult family homes and commercial: Quarterly
